Do you really require a washing machine cover?
Yes if your washing machine is kept on the balcony or terrace, No if kept inside the house.
If your washing machine is kept inside your house in places like the kitchen, in or near the washroom then there is no benefit of covering it.
On the contrary if the cover is waterproof then it is harmful as it can trap moisture inside, moisture buildup inside can lead to mould formation which can deteriorate the washer with time.
But it is a must to protect the washer with a waterproof cover when kept on the balcony or terrace.
Balcony and terrace are prone to dust, rain, sunlight, and pigeon menace.
Direct sunlight is bad for the washing machine. Sunlight can heat the internal motor, and other electronic components deteriorating its life.
Pigeon dropping is high in ammonia, it can degrade the body of your washer faster than expected.
How to choose a washing machine cover?
- Cover is made of either vinyl which is waterproof or with cloth which only protects it from dust.
- Check the dimensions and size of your washing machine and then buy the appropriate size cover. Higher load capacity washers are bigger in size and dimensions.
- Few covers come with pockets to place items like detergent.

A 7kg top load washer is the most common type of washing machine in an Indian household with a family size of 4.
That is why I have put this cover at the top of my list.
Do check the dimensions of your washer before buying the cover. This cover is the right size for a 6 to 7.5 kg washer.

For front loaders with 6-8 kg capacity this cover will come perfectly fit without getting loose.
Make Washing machine cover at home
You can also make a washing machine cover yourself using an old curtain, bedsheet, or with an old piece of cloth but these will not be as good as vinyl or plastic covers available in the market.
This method will fail to protect the appliance from rain and will not be completely waterproof.
